Steps Community Nursery is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, operating within Paces Centre, High Green, Sheffield. The Nursery is managed by a voluntary management committee and an experienced management team within the nursery. The setting has gone from strength since evolving from a small playgroup to a full day care nursery in 2001.
The voluntary playgroup operated from shared premises and provided only 3 sessions per week during term time for up to 20 children aged 2 ½ - 5 years. In January 1998 the group moved to its current premises and a dedicated space, then being able to offer care for 26 children from the age of 18 months, with a staff team of six.
Over the next few years the provision grew, gradually increasing the number of sessions, hours and staff. With the help of a New Opportunities Fund grant, the setting was able to refurbish its premises to provide four dedicated childcare rooms and a kitchen, as well as extending its opening hours and registering as a full day care Nursery. The Nursery was registered in 2001 to provide 55 places for children aged 6 months to 5 years and opens 8am to 6pm, 5 days a week, 50 weeks of the year. Steps Community Nursery now has around 100 children on the register at any one time, employs 21 full and part time staff and remains a sustainable business with an excellent reputation. The Nursery has received consistently good Ofsted reports and now has a turnover of more than £220,000 a year, almost doubling its income in 8 years.
Although the nursery’s current home is suitable, Steps Community Nursery are now looking to build and develop their own purpose built nursery within the Paces grounds. The Nursery will have easy access to a safe enclosed and inclusive outdoor play area whilst providing the same full year, 8am to 6pm service.
A new building will be the next chapter for Steps Community Nursery and although securing the capital money to develop such a building will be a challenge, the whole community will support this venture and there is no doubt that it will be another success.
